VIP Talent of the Lounge
Chavernet Paris: One Dress = One Woman

Interview with Chavernet Designer Maxime Liebens

Olena: Maxime, when I first read Chavernet's introduction, I was impressed by your approach. It reminds me of the legendary madame Chanel who honored style and personality of a woman the most. Her approach was in quality, not in quantity. They say that the day she passed away they only found several outfirs in her closet but all of them were Queen worthy (read "Chanel vs.Vogue"). So, what does this concept actually mean: One dress = One woman?

Maxime: The concept one dress = one woman is based on our way to approach fashion. Unlike most brands we're not following any tendencies or collections. I believe in inspiration and spontaneity of creation. That's why I recommend that women live fashion according to an instant, humour, and need. We are focused on creating a dress which matches them above all.

Olena: How would you describe Chavernet style? What makes it unique in addition to individuality?

Maxime: The Chavernet style is a mixture of ease and sophistication reached through adapting to women's new lifestyle, making the dress classic and modern at the same time.

The creation of a tailor made dress or a semi tailor made one almost disappeared. We are trying to update it by offering limited series or unique pieces.

The uniqueness is not limited to the dress itself but includes progress made with the client in order to get the final result. Beyond the exclusivity, a woman is proud to wear a Chavernet dress. What is important to us is that our dresses are not just consumed like all luxury goods today but are some of the finest pieces that a woman has in her wardrobe.

Olena: I am very excited about the next question: I've always wanted to ask a French designer what the main attributes of a woman's style are. To your opinion, what should a woman have to be stylish?

Maxime: A woman who has style is a woman who has a real personality and wears clothes in adequacy with it. Having style is one thing, assuming it is something else. Our clients are very passionate about fashion and in general they already know what they want and their style is really pronounced.

Olena: Do you personally follow any style "rules" when dressing a woman?

Maxime: Even though we are very instinctive in our way of living fashion and try to be as spontaneous as possible, we follow guidelines. We listen to the needs of women who come to see us but we try to stay in the couture above all. Moreover, we never force ourselves to do something we don't like. If the needs of one of our clients don't correspond to our vision and standards, we just don't create the dress.

The limited series are very rare; I really need to fall in love with a fabric or material to decide to make a limited series of dresses. Besides, they are really exactly what they are meant to be. We don't make any compromise with the choice of fabrics by always looking out for quality before originality. We can even speak about "style ethics" by refusing to enter any group of luxury brands that offers more and more clothes with outrageous prices but of industrial fabrics and of a very bad quality.

Olena: Does your line include only dresses, or also other pieces: purses, maybe accessories?

Maxime: For the moment we just make dresses.

Olena: How can one buy a dress from Chavernet?

Maxime: For the moment we receive our clients in our showroom, rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré (Paris, France). We are studying partnership opportunities with concept stores abroad. In order to give the opportunity to our international clients to buy our dress, we regularly organize private showroom sales in some big cities; we even created a section about various presentations of ours around the world on our website www.chavernet.com.

Olena: If you had to give a piece of fashion advice in a sentence, what would it be?

Maxime: Be yourself.
